Crop Growing

Corn is the cornerstone of rural families’ diets in the Mixtec region, and has been grown since Pre-Hispanic times.  Fruit and vegetables also play an important role in local eating habits, as well as providing valuable income for families when sold at regional markets.  However, the effects of fertilizer and pesticide misuse, along with climate change, have resulted in lots of potentially fertile land being lost. To combat these problems, specialists from UTM regularly provide expert help and training in using the latest techniques and technology to increase productivity and efficiency, as well as the correct usage of fertilisers and pesticides.
